Midterm Exam

The Fall 2025 Midterm Exam serves as a comprehensive assessment of the foundational concepts covered in the first half of the semester. The exam is designed to evaluate your theoretical understanding, mathematical derivations, and analysis of model architectures presented from Topic 1 (Introduction) through Topic 8 (Normalizing Flows).

Logistics (Archived)

The exam will take place during the regular class hours.

  • Date: Sunday, ۱۶ آذر ۱۴۰۴ (December 7, 2025)
  • Time: 10:30 – 12:30
  • Location: Department of Mathematical Sciences, Classroom 211 (same as all classes)

Scope & Material

The exam covers Topics 1 through 8. Please review the slides and notes for the following sections:

  1. Topic 1: Introduction
  2. Topic 2: PGM Representation
  3. Topic 3: PGM Inference
  4. Topic 4: PGM Learning
  5. Topic 5: Autoregressive Models
  6. Topic 6: Variational Autoencoders (VAEs)
  7. Topic 7: Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)
  8. Topic 8: Normalizing Flows

Preparation Advice

The lecture slides cover the complete scope of the exam, including all necessary mathematical derivations. However, given the concise nature of the slides, we highly recommend consulting the Supplementary Material linked on the Course Material page. These resources provide the full context and narrative needed to gain a complete and deep understanding of the concepts presented in class.


Previous Exams

You can review the midterm exam from the previous offering (Fall 2024 or 1403-1) to practice your timing and familiarity with the question style. The new semester's questions will of course be different.
